Too often the thoughts and ideas we share are scrambled, incomplete, and messy. Our timelines are reactionary and instantaneous. Everything becomes microwaveable.
But does this culture produce artistic expression that’s polished and well-crafted?
What does it take to yield an impact that is both profound and lasting?
Billy “B.Well” Weathers is a soulful hip-hop artist and community activist from Des Moines, IA. He’s equipped with calculation, preparation, and patience. Sophistication and grace.
These are the conceptual building blocks that led to the creation of his newest full-length album, Elegance.
The first song of thirteen, “Grace”, begins with a thudding kick-drum reminiscent of the human heart surrounded by billowing piano loops. Immediately B.Well speaks on his quest and the patience required to achieve the level of artistic purity he desires. The mastery of patience is so important to him, the word is tattooed on his hand as a tool for constant reminder.
Elegance continues to engage the listener by way of keys on “High Hopes & Obsessions”, thentransitions gracefully into an isolated vocal performance over guitar and a light synthesizer ambiance. The title track provides a soothing intro that brings the listener in, then explodes with percussion that emphasizes the gifted rapping ability that B.Well displays on this track.
Songs like “Hi” and “Last Call (ft. Annie Kemble)” provide a more playful side of Billy that may have been left to be desired on previous projects. “Believe Me” and “Outside” have groove and natural instinct. “Tough Love” and “Taxdodgin’ (ft. Pyko Da Syko)” provide high-caliber linguistics and complex wordplay. Laced within all these songs are common themes that revolve around feelings of humility and superiority. It’s about bettering oneself through being honest and achieving a level of greatness that is unreachable to most – and being honest about that distinction as well.
This album is a SWOT Analysis on the soul. It’s mature, it’s well-spoken, it’s caring.
Consider this another feather in the cap of a one-of-a-kind human and artist from Des Moines, IA.
This is Elegance.
